For 9-year-old Massachusetts girl, Drive, Chip & Putt provides spark for game

BROOKLINE, Mass. — Likely the young girl with the dazzling smile didn’t appreciate the splendid symmetry of the Sunday morning, standing in a light drizzle at The Country Club. But Jillian Johnson can be excused for not being consumed by what took place at TCC a generation ago; she is but 9 years old and scripting her own special memory in golf.

Having advanced through a local qualifier and a sub-regional, Johnson had earned a spot in the regional phase of the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship, a national competition that in just three years has morphed into something special.
