Finau among five alternates added to U.S. Open field

Tony Finau headlined a list of five alternates who were added to the U.S. Open field on Monday.

The USGA had put aside six spots in the field at Oakmont for players who might qualify by cracking the top 60 in the world rankings following the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Among those not otherwise exempt, only William McGirt made that leap after capturing the Memorial Tournament last week, while players like Ryan Palmer and Joost Luiten fell just short.

That left five spots to be filled from the list of alternates, including Finau, who won earlier this year at the Puerto Rico Open and was first alternate from the sectional qualifier in Springfield, Ohio.
