Keith Pelley, the European Tour’s new chief executive, has done the sensible thing in reducing the required number of tournaments to retain membership.
In his boldest move since taking tour leadership in August, Pelley has slashed the minimum number of events from 13 to just five. The new quota, which goes into effect beginning in the 2016 season, does not include the four major championships and four WGC events, which were included in the old membership minimum. However, the Ryder Cup and EurAsia Cup will count in the new quota.
“The change to our minimum tournament requirement for the 2016 season recognizes that many of our members are global players who, at the same time, wish to remain loyal to the European Tour,” said Pelley, a Canadian.
