Traditionally, the week after the Masters is time to decompress, but this year it includes deadline pressure for some, thanks to a new wrinkle to the PGA Tour schedule. With the WGC-Match Play Championship moved back (April 29-May 3) from its accustomed February slot, the field won’t be firmed up until after this week’s competitions — the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head, S.C., and the Shenzhen International in China.
The most noteworthy item involves Ernie Els. One year after making the semifinals, he’s presently 77th and barring a big week at Hilton Head, he will miss qualifying for match play for the first time in his career.
