Brendon de Jonge became the 13th player to withdraw his name from consideration for this year’s Olympics, but unlike the other players who will skip golf’s return to the Games because of concerns about the Zika virus the Zimbabwean cited job security for his decision.
“The reason for my decision is not my concern about the Zika virus. It is truly a business decision,” de Jonge said in a statement. “It would have been a great honor to play for my country.”
De Jonge is currently 160th on the FedEx Cup points list and would miss two of the last three regular-season events (Travelers Championship and John Deere Classic), which could keep him from finishing in the top 125 and maintaining his PGA Tour card.
