LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Jason Day’s bid for 59 came up short. His attempt to go from 0 to 60 in 20 hours lipped out and he settled for a 10-under 61 in the opening round of the BMW Championship.
It was a longshot that he would hole a 44-yard pitch shot to become the seventh player in PGA Tour history to shoot 59, but it didn’t prevent a large gathering of fans and media from circling around the ninth green to see a shot at history stop 9 feet, 7 inches short of the hole.
“it was a tough shot to hole,” Day said.
