NORTON, Mass. — What plugged a few volts of electricity into the early proceedings at the Deutsche Bank Championship was the birdie-birdie-birdie start by Jason Day.
Then again, if some folks yawned, it was for good reason. Doesn’t the Aussie birdie every golf hole he plays?
Actually, no, he doesn’t, and for proof, consider that in his previous 360 holes — 72 holes each at Day’s previous five tournaments — the 27-year-old had made “only” five eagles and 99 birdies. Of course, he had played those 360 holes to the tune of 76 under par and three of the tournaments had been victories, so who among the large crowd of fans was surprised when Day signed for a 3-under 68?
