AKRON, Ohio – U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III withdrew after the first round of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational with a torn left hip labrum that he said will require season-ending surgery.
“I’ve got to get it fixed,” said Love, who signed for 78. “I don’t want to be limping around at the Ryder Cup.”
Love, 52, said he had tried therapy and received an injection 2 months ago, but couldn’t withstand the pain any longer. He knew surgery was imminent when his swing coach, Jack Lumpkin, and spine therapist were at odds with each other.
