SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke has completed his vice-captain lineup. His fifth and final selection: Sam Torrance, a 62-year-old from Scotland who played in eight straight Ryder Cups, from 1981 to 1995, and captained the victorious 2002 European squad.
“He’s been a friend of mine for a very long time,” Clarke said Tuesday at the PGA Championship. “I played with him in my first professional tournament. He’s a very experienced Ryder Cup player, successful Ryder Cup player, and indeed, very successful Ryder Cup captain. … I think with his knowledge, something may come up during the week at Hazeltine that I may not be expecting.
