Construction begins on Mickelson's course in Canada

Construction has begun on Phil Mickelson’s latest design project, Mickelson National Golf Club, at the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Barry Ehlert, managing partner of Windmill Golf Group, described the announcement as being “seven years in the making,” after the project, originally a Johnny Miller design, was put on hold because of the economic downturn.

The course, located just west of Calgary, is tentatively scheduled to open in fall 2017, with hopes of eventually hosting the Canadian Open.

“I’m thrilled that we’ve begun work on a project we’re confident will be one of the outstanding courses in Canada,” Mickelson said in a release.
