Colin Montgomerie returns to boyhood home at Royal Troon as de facto host of British Open

TROON, Scotland – The R&A can go home. It seems as if Colin Montgomerie is putting on this week’s British Open, which perhaps explains why he referred to himself as this week’s “host.”

Montgomerie had reason to be proud as he faced the world’s media Monday at Royal Troon Golf Club. He’s the local boy, the lad who grew up five houses from Royal Troon’s first tee. He’s still a member of the club.

“I could really throw a ball from here to the house,” he said.

Montgomerie’s father, James, was once Royal Troon’s secretary. So Colin grew up in Troon before the family moved to Leeds, England, when he was 10.
