Charlotte’s own Simpson in the hunt at Wells Fargo Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — “Everybody OK?” Webb Simpson asked as he approached his ball left of the green at the par-4 9th after pulling his final approach shot of the day in the opening round of the Wells Fargo Championship.

“We’re good, Webb,” a southern voice rang back, bringing a few chuckles from the gallery that had quickly gathered around the ball.

Simpson smiled as he addressed his shot, then — almost on cue for his local fans — flopped a beautiful wedge high into the Carolina blue sky. They oohed-and-ahhed as it landed softly just over a ridge and trickled down to the pin.
