Chambers Bay local highlights natural charms of U.S. Open venue

Editor’s note: Brian Mogg, who grew up in the Pacific Northwest before becoming an All-American at Ohio State and playing the PGA Tour in the 1980s, runs the Brian Mogg Golf Academy at Chambers Bay, site of the U.S. Open. He shared his insights on Chambers Bay for Golfweek.com.

Virtually every junior golfer has stood over a short putt and imagined “this is to win the U.S. Open.” I did this as a young boy growing up in Tacoma, Wash., a few miles from this year’s U.S. Open site. I would eagerly look forward to the tournament each June as some of the great courses in the East – Oakmont, Winged Foot and Merion among them – would decide our national championship.
