PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Rory McIlroy stuck to his conservative game plan in the second round of the Players Championship. Well, he did for 15 holes anyway. Then the World No. 1 simply ran out of patience. Another round that exceeded five hours in length was taking its toll on his interest level.
“I was pretty bored out there,” McIlroy said. “I’m not sure how you guys felt about watching it. Just try and hit fairways, hit greens, pick off my birdies when I could.”
That strategy worked well enough for McIlroy to avoid most of the perils at TPC Sawgrass and shoot a 1-under 71 to trail the 36-hole leaders (at 8-under 136) by four strokes.
