Mark down April 26, 2015 as another significant day in the history of Chinese golf. Ashun Wu became the first Chinese player to win on home soil with a victory in the Volvo China Open.
Wu held off a resurgent David Howell to earn €498,095 (approx. $541,000) and a place in the history books. The 29-year-old returned a closing 1-under-par 71 for a 9-under 279 on Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Course to defeat Howell by a shot. Howell missed an eight-foot par putt on the last that would have forced a playoff.
“It’s a wonderful day today,” Wu said, who began the final round in a four-way tie for the lead along with Howell, compatriot Hao-tong Li and Alexander Levy of France.
