AKRON, Ohio – After Dustin Johnson claimed his elusive first major championship at Oakmont Country Club, he flew home to Florida and by the time he unloaded his car, including the U.S. Open trophy, it already was 4 a.m. Too late to celebrate.
“I left (the trophy) set up in the kitchen so when I came down the next morning it was sitting right there,” said Johnson, speaking publicly for the first time since Oakmont ahead of his appearance in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. “Gave me a smile a little bit.”
So did the realization that he no longer will have to answer the inevitable questions of being “the best player never to win a major,” or why it all had gone horribly wrong at (insert Pebble Beach, Whistling Straits, Chambers Bay, you name it).
