American presence shrinks at WGC-Dell Match Play as global game rises

AUSTIN, Texas — There are countless ways to detail how the landscape has changed, how global golf has become routine on the PGA Tour. Here is one: Exactly half the groups in this year’s WGC-Dell Match Play — eight of 16 — feature four players from four different nations.

Take that a step further and consider that two of the groups don’t have even one American involved. The power-packed Group 2 of Jason Day, Paul Casey, Thongchai Jaidee and Graeme McDowell features flags from Australia, England, Thailand and Northern Ireland. You have flags from South Africa (Louis Oosthuizen), England (Andy Sullivan), Austria (Bernd Wiesberger) and Australia (Matt Jones) in Group 16.
