A Homecoming for Steve Stricker

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — As Steve Stricker approaches the twilight of his career, this P.G.A. Championship could be as meaningful to him as any major he has played.

There may be no greater sentimental favorite for the season’s final major at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, the state where Stricker was born and raised and that he refuses to leave except when work takes him around the country and the world.

Tim Finchem, the commissioner of the PGA Tour, referred to Stricker and his wife, Nicki, as “two of our favorite people.” It a familiar comment because of what Stricker has done on the golf course and the respect he has earned off it.
