The Golden State Warriors (70-9) had a rough week, seeing their home winning streak snapped by the Celtics and blowing a 17-point lead in a loss to the Timberwolves, but they responded with one of their best performances in one of the biggest games of the season.
Golden State is now just the second team in NBA history to win 70 games in a regular season, reaching the mark with a dominant 112-101 blowout victory over the San Antonio Spurs (65-13). The win also clinches the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference Playoffs for the Warriors.
Both teams traded buckets in the first quarter as neither side was really able to assert their dominance - but it didn't take long for the Warriors to do just that in the second.
Golden State opened the quarter on a 16-6 run, taking control and setting the tone for the remainder of the game. They went on to shoot an astonishing 70 percent from the field in the second and third quarters, building a 21-point lead. San Antonio wasn't able to cut the deficit to anything less than 11 the rest of the way.
The Warriors ended up shooting 54.2 percent from the field and 48 percent from three-point range as a team. MVP frontrunner Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 27 points and nine assists. Harrison Barnes also contributed in a big way with 21 points and eight rebounds.
San Antonio did not rest their staters as many thought they would, yet they might as well have. Kawhi Leonard led the way with 23 points - no one else scored more than 11.
The Warriors are now just three wins away from breaking the mark for best season in NBA history with three games left. They will go for win No. 71 on Saturday against the Grizzlies in Memphis.
San Antonio returns to action tomorrow night against the Denver Nuggets in the second night of a road back-to-back.
