Golden State Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson will miss Friday night's game in Boston against the Celtics due to a right ankle injury. He sustained the injury in the final minutes of Tuesday's 131-123 win against the Pacers.
"It's not feeling great, but it's not feeling bad," Thompson said following Thursday's practice. "It's like somewhere in between. It's like 60 percent -- nah, 70."
It doesn't appear things changed very much approaching Friday's tipoff team, as Thompson was downgraded to out with just under an hour until tipoff. The coaching staff monitored him very closely during Thursday's practice and during pregame warmups on Friday, ultimately deciding to exercise caution with the risk out there of him potentially compounding the problem.
"If there's any concern at all that his ankle's hurt, then we're not going to play him," interim coach Luke Walton said on Thursday. Walton stayed true to his word, pulling Thompson out regardless of how it affects the team's chances of improving to an NBA-record 24-0.
With Thompson out, the onus will likely be on Ian Clark to take over the reins alongside Stephen Curry. Clark was wearing a starter's blue jersey as shootaround ended on Friday. Brandon Rush will also likely rotate in, especially if Leandro Barbosa is held out due to illness.
“We can run every play that we have in our offense, whether it’s Ian, B-Rush or if L.B. will back, Curry said. “All of those guys can step in and run the same kinds of sets and look for the same shots.
