The Golden State Warriors have ridden their current core of stars to the most successful four-year run in NBA history, but there's a chance that shakeups to that core may be on the horizon.
Owner Joe Lacob told Mark Medina of the Bay Area News Group that the franchise needs “to be relentless” in continuing to improve their roster, which may mean making some changes in the future.
“We’ll build around that core until we decide maybe we shouldn’t. But right now it feels pretty good,” Lacob said. “These guys are all performing at a great level. We love them as part of our organization. I don’t really see doing anything major. But you never really know. We have to evaluate when the season is over. It’s very hard when you’re in the middle of it all to see it objectively.
“We just have to work hard every day to make sure we are getting better. It’s going to take that, whether you have those core four or not.”
Those changes may not come until 2019 when Klay Thompson becomes a free agent. Golden State is not expected to be able to re-sign him, as he's expected to receive a max contract on the open market. Draymond Green's deal expires the following season.
The Warriors were able to keep their current core together thanks to Kevin Durant taking less money this offseason, but head coach Steve Kerr doesn't think that will continue.
“You can’t just expect players to take less money so we can keep this thing going. That’s totally unfair to ask players to do that,” Kerr said. “So you have to work within the confines of the salary cap and the structure. The big thing is we have an ownership group that is 100 percent committed to winning. They are going to spend every dollar we need to keep us competitive, and we have great resources.”

Golden State has been linked to New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis and may pursue a trade for him this offseason. A potential deal would likely involve Thompson and Green being dealt to New Orleans for Davis.
Davis, 24, has routinely said that he wants to spend his entire career with the Pelicans and is only in the second year of the five-year max deal that will keep him in the Big Easy until 2021.
New Orleans' front office has also remained adamant about keeping Davis, but if Demps gets fired following the season, there's a very real possibility that a new GM would push the button on a rebuild - and Davis would bring back a significant return.
Davis is averaging 28.2 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game this season.
