The Golden State Warriors are facing a crucial offseason after winning their second NBA title in three years.
Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry are both unrestricted free agents, and after they re-sign both to max deals (or close to it, since both say they are willing to take less), the Warriors will have very little cap space to work with. Considering that Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston and Ian Clark are also free agents, there's a good chance they won't be able to bring all of those guys back.
As such, Golden State will have to look for discounts on the free agent market to find depth. One of those players could be Vince Carter, who Carlos Murillo of Blue Man Hoop writes should be a target for the Warriors.
The Dubs will have to fill out their bench once again. After re-signing Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant to their max or near-max deals, the Dubs are going to have to find players at discounted rates. That’s where Vince Carter enters.
The 40 year old swingman is in the final years of his career. He would be a cheap replacement if and when Ian Clark signs a contract with someone that Golden State can’t and won’t match. At this stage of his career, he’d probably sign for the veteran minimum if he has a chance at a championship.
He can space the floor with a bench unit that will (probably) include Andre Iguodala and (possibly) include Shaun Livingston. At 6’6, he can provide good length on the wing that would fit in nicely with what the Warriors like to do defensively. For the price, it could be worth a look if you’re the Warriors.
Carter said this season that he wants to play for two more years last season, which would mean that he's preparing for the 2017-18 season to be his last. However, he continues to expend that deadline.
“I said to myself 'I want to play 15 years.' I don’t know where I got that from," Carter said. "And the I got to 15 years and I kept going. I never capped it, but at the same time I’ve had a lot of players remind me of things I’ve said. I’m still saying 'two more years and I’m done.'"
The 40-year-old Carter averaged 8.0 points and 3.1 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game for the Grizzlies this past season.
