The Golden State Warriors are in the driver's seat in the race to sign free agent big man and former Cleveland Cavs stalwart Anderson Varejao, per sources cited by ESPN's Marc Stein.
Varejao officially clears waivers after 5:00pm EST on Sunday, and a deal with the 2014-15 NBA Champions could come together in quick succession.
According to Stein, Varejao is currently deciding between offers by the Warriors and San Antonio Spurs. The Los Angeles Clippers, Atlanta Hawks, and Oklahoma City Thunder were part of another handful of teams who expressed interest in the veteran power forward/center. Varejao was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in advance of Thursday's NBA Trade Deadline as part of a three-team deal which sent Channing Frye to the Cavs. Portland agreed to waive Varejao despite two years and $14 million of guaranteed money left on his deal, with a future first-round pick providing the main incentive for joining the deal with Cleveland and Orlando.
The Warriors are need of reinforcements in the frontcourt with Festus Ezeli recovering from knee surgery and Andrew Bogut working through an Achilles problem. Varejao would join fellow Brazilian Leandro Barbosa on the Warriors roster, along with former teammate Luke Walton -- now an assistant coach for the Warriors
Varejao played for 11 1/2 seasons with the Cavs, posting career averages of 7.6 points and 7.5 rebounds in an average of 25 minutes per game.
