Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr ripped his team after their 126-106 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night, saying they didn't play with any effort while venting frustrations to the media about his team's recent play.
"Caring in general was the main problem," Kerr said.
The Warriors are already locked into the two-seed in the Western Conference with a 57-22 record, but they're 6-8 over their last 14 games.
“I’m mad. I’m embarrassed,” Kerr said. “I know that this game doesn’t mean anything in the seedings. But the playoffs start next week. It’s an embarrassing effort and a pathetic effort. Maybe they are [tired]. Maybe that’s what it is. The game doesn’t matter. So we’ll try next week. Hopefully we will.”
Golden State failed to outscore the Pacers in a single quarter as Indiana built a 22-point lead midway through the third quarter. However, Kevin Durant did not agree with Kerr's assessment of the team's struggles.
"Nah, I thought we cared tonight," he said. "We cared. Over the last few games, we cared. ...They came out with a better strategy, being more aggressive than us. ... I think we care. I think everybody in this locker room cares about playing ball. I disagree with that, but I understand what he's doing."
The Warriors are playing without Stephen Curry, who will be out until the postseason with an MCL injury, and their offense has struggled. Golden State shot just 31 percent from three-point range while allowing the Pacers to shoot 53.8 percent from the field and make 15 threes.
With the victory, Indiana became the first team to earn a season sweep over Golden State since Kerr became head coach.
