The Golden State Warriors are in the middle of another long playoff run and Klay Thompson is still under contract for another season, but the two sides are already working on a contract extension, according to Marcus Thompson of The Athletic.
Klay Thompson’s professed dedication to the Warriors and the Bay Area isn’t just words. He said he wants to stay and he’s already taking the steps to do so.
According to multiple sources, Thompson and the Warriors have already engaged in discussions regarding a contract extension. If the sides agree this offseason, Thompson would not hit the free-agent market for up to another five years.
Golden State would need Thompson to take significantly less than the max in order for the Warriors to be able to re-sign him, and signing an extension instead of waiting for free agency would be a step in doing that.
Given the current salary structure in place (the first year of an extension is a 120 percent increase, at most, from the final year of the previous contract), Thompson's extension would be for four years and just over $102 million.
Should he hit free agency, Thompson is capable of signing a deal worth roughly $150 million.
“It’s something that definitely crossed my mind, especially when you see guys like Kevin (Durant) doing it," Thompson told reporters in China before the season started. "One hundred percent, it’d be different if I was making scraps off the court, but I’ve been very blessed to be a part of winning team. When you’re part of a winning team, everybody gets to eat.
"So that’s why I’m indebted to the guys around me. Without them, I would not have the deals that I have.”
Thompson currently has an apparel contract with Anta that runs through 2026 and is worth $80 million. He also has deals with BODYARMOR Sports Drink and Built with Chocolate Milk.
He averaged 20.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game this season.
