The Golden State Warriors will keep the name Golden State Warriors when they move to San Francisco. "Let's make it official," Welts said.
The Warriors were known as the San Francisco Warriors following their move from Philadelphia in 1962 through 1971 when Oakland Arena became their exclusive home court. The change to Golden State was made to suggest that the team represented the entire state of California rather than a particular city.
With the team moving back to San Francisco, they had been thinking about changing the name back to the San Francisco Warriors. However, they are keeping the Golden State mantra.
The Warriors will play their final season at Oracle Arena in Oakland next year and are scheduled to move into Chase Arena for the start of the 2019-2020 season.
Golden State is locked into the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with a 57-21 record.
