The Golden State Warriors picked up their 69th win of the season Sunday, tying the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers and 1996-97 Chicago Bulls for second-most wins in an NBA season. The Warriors (69-8) defeated the Portland Trail Blazers (41-37) 136-111. The Warriors have five games left and need to finish the year with a 4-1 record to set the NBA record for most wins in a season.
It was a high-scoring affair, with the Blazers actually leading 37-31 after the first quarter, but the Warriors put up 32 and 38 points in the next two quarters to pull away. The Warriors hit 56.8 percent of their shots and were even better beyond the arc, hitting 60 percent.
Damian Lillard and Stephen Curry went back-and-forth for much of the game. Curry finished with 39 points, hitting 9 of 13 3-pointers and adding seven assists and six rebounds. It his NBA-best 38th 30-point game this season. Lillard, an Oakland native, dropped 38 points. He hit 13 of his 27 shots.
Draymond Green had triple-double for the Warriors. He put up 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Five Warriors put up double-figures, with Klay Thompson adding 21. Five Trail Blazers had double-figures as well. Their second-leading scorer was C.J. McCollum, who had 18 points.
The Warriors continue their drive for 73 wins Tuesday against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Trail Blazers visit the Sacramento Kings Tuesday.
