The Golden State Warriors have been chasing the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls all season long, and the reigning NBA champions' quest to surpass their 72-10 record is still alive after a thrilling comeback to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies on the road, 100-99.
The game was a close one throughout, as Golden State led by three after the first quarter and at halftime. The third quarter was all Grizzlies, as they outscored the Warriors by 11 to go ahead.
But Steve Kerr's team, as they often do, came roaring back to re-take the lead in the fourth, going ahead on a Draymond Green tip with a minute left to play. Lance Stephenson had two chances to tie with the clock winding down, but could not convert. He had his first attempt blocked by Klay Thompson, and missed his second effort after tracking down the loose ball.
Even with the chase for 73 looming, Kerr chose to rest starting center Andrew Bogut and kept his top players from logging heavy minutes. Stephen Curry, Thompson and Green all played 35 minutes or less on the night.
Four different Warriors scored in double figures. Green had a team-high 23 points, while Thompson chipped in 20 and Curry 17.
Former Warrior Matt Barnes led the way for Memphis, scoring 24 points and pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds.
Golden State now heads to San Antonio for the second leg of a back-to-back before wrapping up the season against these same Grizzlies at Oracle Arena on Wednesday.
