The Golden State Warriors made franchise history with their first NBA title in 40 years this past summer. Now, they've made league history with a season-opening run for the record books.
Klay Thompson led the Warriors with 21 points, Stephen Curry chipped in 19 in just 27 minutes and the Warriors moved to a perfect 15-0 on the season with a 118-105 road win over the Denver Nuggets.
Tonight's win ties the Warriors with the 1948-49 Washington Capitols and 1993-94 Houston Rockets for the most wins to start an NBA season. Golden State has now eclipsed the 1957-58 Boston Celtics (14-0) for the most wins by a defending NBA champion to start a campaign. The Warriors will be able to move into sole possession of the record with a home win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.
Denver made a game of it early, pounding the rock down low to keep the game within five, 63-58, at the half. However, Golden State increased the margin to eleven after three, as Stephen Curry dropped in ten in the frame to help extend the advantage. The Warriors wouldn't slow down in the fourth, slowly putting the game away with their trademark smothering defense and clutch shooting.
Nuggets PF Darrell Arthur led all scorers with 21, pounding the Warriors inside on a 75% shooting night. However, the Nuggets were dead cold from beyond the arc, hitting just 4 of 15 shots from downtown (26.7%). Golden State, on the other hand, shot the lights out to the tune of 52.8% from the floor and 51.7% from beyond the arc. Stephen Curry (3), Klay Thompson (4) and Draymond Green (3) combined for ten of the team's 15 made threes.
Overall, it was another perfect team effort for the NBA's unquestioned best teams. All 12 players who saw minutes on Sunday chipped in at least one made field goal. The Warriors also moved the ball as efficiently as ever, posting 35 assists to Denver's 23.
Golden State's push for 16-0 will take place at Oracle Arena in Oakland on Tuesday, November 24th. Tipoff will be shortly after 7:30pm PST.
