Something had to give Sunday night between the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs, as both teams were playing for NBA records. The Warriors needed to win to keep their hope for the most wins an NBA season alive and the Spurs were looking to stay perfect at home this season. It was the Warriors who came out on top, winning 92-86.
The Warriors (72-9) tied the NBA record for most wins in a single season with the victory, matching the 1995-96 Bulls. The Spurs' (65-15) chance at becoming the first NBA team with an undefeated season at home was ended with the loss. The Spurs were down 10 points with 1:24 to play and cut that lead down to four, but couldn't complete the comeback.
It was a low-scoring first half, with the two teams combining for just 35 points. It's just the second time all season the Warriors have been held below 40 points in the first half, both times against the Spurs. It was just a one-point game after the third quarter, with the Warriors up 62-61.
Stephen Curry but the Warriors on his back and carried them against the Spurs. He had 37 points, twice as many as any other Warrior. He had 16 in the third quarter and was 4 of 9 from beyond the arc. Klay Thompson (14 points) and Draymond Green (11 points) were the only other Warriors to reach double-figures.
Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge led the way for the Spurs. Aldridge had 24 points and 10 rebounds. Leonard had 20 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals. The Spurs had no other players in double-figures.
The Warriors search for win No. 73 and the outright record at home Wednesday against Memphis in their season finale. The Spurs have two games left this season, at home against the Oklahoma City Thunder Tuesday and on the road Wednesday against the Dallas Mavericks.
