On Thanksgiving Eve, reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry sat down for a candid interview which will be published in an upcoming edition of ESPN's The Mag. The talk circled from his Golden State Warriors' growing list of records/accomplishments, to his quest to outdo Michael Jordan, all the way to discussing his favorite "seat" in the house. Here's seven things we learned from the interview.
1. Floating Is A Big Part Of Curry's Success
Curry regularly spends one-hour sessions floating in water mixed with 1,000 pounds of Epson salt, floating and meditating in a sensory deprivation tank at the Reboot Float Spa in San Francisco.
"It's an opportunity to relax, for one. And it obviously has some physical benefits as well, with [the magnesium in] the salt, being able to relax those sore muscles," Curry says. "But to get away from the demands and all the stimuli we have in the world and in our lives, that was the main draw. When I get in the tank, I lean back, try to take a couple of deep breaths, ground myself and commence the floating. Then it's just me and my thoughts for an hour, playing Russian roulette of the mind."
2. He's Got The Lakers' Record In His Sights
The Golden State Warriors already hold the greatest record to start an NBA regular season at 23-0, but what about the 1971-72 Lakers' all-time best winning streak of 33? Curry says he'd love for the team to put that feather in their caps.
"Why not? It'd be an amazing accomplishment," Curry said. "On that same note, we don't want to fast-forward. Just like this start, nobody thought about it until the 12th game. There's so much in between."
3. How About 73 Wins?
Not shy about revealing his true feelings, Curry would also love to take down the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls' all-time best regular season mark of 72-10. "Yeah, but we have to do it the right way. We want to keep getting better and be at our best come April. If we don't win the championship, what good is 73?"
4. Curry Wants The Rock (Against MJ)
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr loves to debate with the rest of the team over whether his 95-96 Chicago Bulls or this Warriors squad would win in a hypothetical battle for the ages. Kerr does say that it'd likely come down to a final possession with Michael Jordan shadowing Curry with the ball. What would Steph do then?
"Right to left, step back. I knock it down," Curry said, matter-of-factly.
5. In Fact, Curry Would Love To Take Jordan's Throne
"Yeah," Curry answered when asked whether or not he'd like to supplant Michael Jordan as the greatest NBA player in history. "Why else would I be playing? You want to be the best you can be. And if the best you can be is better than him, then why not? That's good motivation."
6. Contrary To Popular Belief, The Warriors Don't Hate The Clippers
"We don't hate them, but we love to beat them," Curry said when pressed on the team's view of their California rivals. "It feels good to beat a team like that, with the history behind it. It's not white and black. We respect them. They are a talented team. They keep us sharp, focused. They give us an edge. We feed off that."
7. His Most Prized Possession? A Toilet
Curry's wife, Ayesha, bought him an automated toilet while he was in Minnesota on a road trip earlier this year. He was beyond stoked. "Oh, man, that toilet just makes me happy in life. And when you're happy, you play better. I bet if I did a case study on my performance since I got the toilet, you'd see the difference."
Steph scored 46 points the very next night, so you put the dots together.
