There are some standard time-worn patterns for dealing with depth. For instance, Al Attles in the W’s 1974-5 championship season would play Rick Barry and Jamaal Wilkes starters’ minutes but platoon (sometime 3 deep) at other positions. And when Barry and Wilkes were subbed for you have a whole team platoon.
Teams more standardly develop a “rotation” and then they’re guys on the deep bench. There’s movement between the “bench” and “deep bench” (conspicuously in injury); and often when a deep bench guy gets an opportunity he might break into the rotation. But then he’s usually replacing someone and a slightly different (personnel-wise) but still typical stasis of the the basic formation re-establishes itself.
