OAKLAND – The Warriors sat attentively and soaked in every moment. Rarely does that happen during a practice. Not when the Warriors have played from September through June for four consecutive years.
This practice was different, though. On Tuesday, Tommie Smith visited the Warriors’ facility as part of the team’s initiative to celebrate Black History Month. Then, Smith shared his story. On Oct. 16, 1968, Smith (gold) and John Carlos (bronze) won medals in the 200-meter dash for in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. During the medal ceremony, both Smith and Carlos work a black glove and raised their fists during the national anthem to protest racial inequality during the end of the civil rights movement.
