Today is Juneteenth, an important and powerful day in American history.
It was on this day 155 years ago that a group of enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned that they were free from enslavement, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
It’s a day that serves for many as both a celebration of taking a step towards freedom, and a sharp reminder of how strong systemic racism and oppression are, and how far from actual freedom Black communities are.
On Thursday the Golden State Warriors released a statement mentioning that the organization is observing Juneteenth, and encouraging employees to take part in actions across their communities.
