OAKLAND — Roughly 30 minutes after the final buzzer sounds on most nights, Patrick McCaw’s father, Jeffrey, calls with a detailed rundown of his son’s performance.
As a youth, McCaw would follow his father to practices at McCluer South-Berkeley High School in Ferguson, Missouri, where Jeffrey was an assistant coach. The experience helped McCaw see the game three or four plays ahead, but also caused the young guard to overthink.
Now, on the back end of a season that has included injury, subpar play and even a G League stint, McCaw is playing by a new mantra: don’t let overthinking affect your aggressiveness.
