SAN DIEGO — In the winter of 2011, Kevon Looney read a local newspaper article touting him as the Milwaukee area’s best rebounder.
It took seeing those words in print for the gangly Alexander Hamilton High School sophomore to realize he had a knack for crashing the glass. In that moment, poring over a recap of the previous night’s game, Looney decided to craft his playing style around his best skill.
“I was like, ‘I’m going to make that my claim to fame,’” Looney recalled after Warriors practice Tuesday at UC San Diego.
Now entering his second NBA campaign, the 6-foot-9, 220-pound small forward hopes his penchant for boxing out will help him earn a rotation spot on the league’s deepest team.
