WASHINGTON — Long before the mansion atop the Oakland hills, the nine All-Star appearances or the 20,494 career points, Kevin Durant was a gangly 14-year-old at his local public high school.
It was a brief stop in a life defined by transience: After only a few weeks at Suitland High in Forestville, Md., Durant transferred to nearby National Christian Academy, where he first caught the attention of college coaches. But even as he chartered a course for NBA stardom away from his hometown in Prince George’s County, Md., Durant never lost his love and appreciation for where he grew up.
