Head coach Steve Kerr seemed alternately upbeat and crestfallen before the Warriors opened their season Tuesday night — understandable as he twists in uncommon limbo.
Kerr, trying to recover from two offseason back surgeries, has improved enough to attend practice the past four days. He also participated in the pregame ring ceremony at Oracle Arena, before the Warriors played New Orleans.
But then he retreated to the locker room before the game began, with Luke Walton taking charge on the bench.
“I am feeling better,” Kerr said in a brief news conference.
