Thompson: Golden State Warriors owe championship to its ringleader

Joe Lacob has made this drive many times, from his peninsula home to Oracle Arena in Oakland. He remembers the drive five years ago like it was yesterday, because it was the first game after he and Peter Guber officially became owners of the Warriors, a $450-million deal in which he outbid Larry Ellison.

That night as Lacob watched the Warriors -- his Warriors -- his new reality suddenly hit him."We were playing Detroit. I leaned over to Peter and said, 'We suck.'"And they did. The Warriors won only 36 games that season.Today marks the fifth anniversary of the ownership change, and the Warriors stand as NBA champions, winners of 67 games last season.
