OAKLAND — Last month, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich expressed uncertainty when asked about his coaching future beyond this season.
“I don’t know the answer,” he told the New York Times.
More than two weeks later, one of Popovich’s star pupils, Steve Kerr, still believes the 70-year-old Pop has a lot left in the tank.
“I don’t get the sense that he’s anywhere close to stepping down,” Kerr said Tuesday afternoon. “Then again, I’ve never asked him, but I just know how much he loves coaching.”
Kerr, who played for the Spurs under Popovich during two different stints (1998-2001, 2002-03), and has committed to being an assistant under Popovich during the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, gushed over Popovich’s ability to continually adapt his system to different rosters.
