OAKLAND – Warriors coach Steve Kerr was a rookie guard in 1989 when racially charged riots sent parts of Miami in flames, canceling a mid-season game between Kerr’s Phoenix Suns and the Heat.

The riots were in response to a police shooting in which officer William Lozano, a Miami police officer, killed two black men as they drove a motorcycle along a Miami street.

Nearly three decades later, protests nearly canceled another game about 80 miles from Kerr’s current place of employment.
