I’ve heard “MVP” chants at Oracle Arena for years. A decade ago, they came from carpet-bagging Lakers fans cheering on Kobe Bryant. Then they came from LeBron James supporters during his annual trip to Oakland. Four or five years ago, Monta Ellis would occasionally elicit a brief chant from particularly rowdy crowds. Those MVP calls always seemed aspirational at best (delusional at worst) — as if Warriors fans were trying to will Ellis into being something they knew deep down he was not. The “MVP” chants in Oracle Arena this year are different. They’re for a home-grown star and they’re not the least bit delusional.
