Curry's bum knee: What exactly is an MCL, anyway?

OK, Steph Curry's MRI revealed his MCL suffered a Grade 1 sprain. So what the heck is an MCL? And Grade 1, that sounds like the worst, right?

Curry may end up doing for the MCL -- Medial Collateral Ligament, a dense band of fibrous tissue just outside the knee joint -- what Tommy John did for the ulnar collateral ligament, which is now corrected with a surgical procedure that bears the former Yankees pitcher's name. The good news is that MCL injuries aren't nearly as serious as that, and Grade 1 is the least damaging version of all.
