Shortly after the Kuminga selection was made, Perkins, the much-maligned ESPN NBA commentator and former player, pushed back on a comparison from Mike Schmitz (the network's main draft analyst) that drew parallels between Kuminga and Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown. Instead, Perkins said, Kuminga more closely resembles Bell, a second-round pick of the Warriors in 2017 who played two seasons with the team before departing in 2019 and briefly returning on a two-way contract last season.
"I do have a problem with the comparison to Jaylen Brown, I can’t roll with that one," Perkins said. "What I will say is he reminds me right now of Jordan Bell, and we remember Jordan Bell when he was fitting in with the Golden State Warriors, they would move him into the five position, having him picking and rolling to the basket, being a live threat at the basket, being able to be out there athletically, switching from one to five.
