It’s not just because of Dante’s Commedia that I love terza rima. Ok, it is because of Dante’s Commedia but specifically because of how the pilgrim’s journey in the poem typifies and points to and illuminates our own journey.

A new tercet reaches back for the recessed rhyme in the preceding tercet in order to form the ground for its own leap forward. And so on.
In other words, we move forward, when we move forward healthily, by recapitulation. We don’t stay immured in the past.
