The Golden State Warriors fell just short of winning their second straight championship this season, but that doesn't mean they won't be very aggressive in free agency this offseason. Golden State is planning to go "big-game hunting," namely their plans to go after Durant, on the open market, but signing the wrong guy would send them in the wrong direction. Here are three free agents the Warriors should avoid this offseason:
PF Dirk Nowitzki
Golden State has said that Dirk is a secondary option for them if they don't land Durant, but I don't see the fit. His shooting ability fits in with their offense and would give them a scoring punch from a big man they haven't had, but he would be a MASSIVE downgrade for them defensively. Low-post defense was one of Golden State's biggest problems against the Cavs and Thunder, and Nowitzki would only make that problem worse.
C Dwight Howard
I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. There are rumors that Howard is another option for the Warriors, but that would be the biggest mistake they could make. Not only would Howard undoubtedly mess up the locker room chemistry, he will demand the ball on offense (which is why he's leaving Houston), and he won't be anything more than the fourth option for Golden State.
SF Harrison Barnes
Barnes has been a key contributor for the Warriors over the last two years, but his time with the team seems to have run it's course. More than just his unimpressive performance in the Finals, someone will give Barnes a max contract. The Warriors don't need to play him that much money, especially with them playing Iguodala over him in key stretches.
