The Golden State Warriors (68-7) had not lost at home all season. That is no longer the case, as the Boston Celtics (44-32) knocked off the Warriors 109-106 Friday night. The Celtics led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter and withstood a late charge from the Warriors.
The Warriors cut the lead to one with 10 seconds left, but came up short. Stephen Curry missed a game-tying 3-pointer just before the buzzer. It is the first time the Warriors have lost at home in the regular season since Jan. 27th, 2015, an NBA record.
Isaiah Thomas and Stephen Curry went off in a third quarter that featured a combined 73 points from the two teams. Curry dropped 21 points and hit 6 of 6 3-pointers. Thomas had 18 points in the third.
It was a rough night early for Curry, although he did find his groove as the game went on. The Warriors had eight turnovers in the first quarter, including five by Curry against just three points. But Curry finished the game with 29 points, and was 8 of 14 from 3-point range.
Four Celtics had at least 15 points, with three putting up 20 points. Thomas led the way with 22 points and six assists. Jared Sullinger had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Evan Turner added 21 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Curry led the Warriors with 29 points, although he did turn the ball over nine times. Draymond Green dropped 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and six steals.
The Warriors search for win No. 69 Sunday when they host the Portland Trail Blazers. For the Warriors to break the NBA single-season win record, they must finish the season with a 5-1 mark. The Celtics visit the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday.
