After purchasing twelve acres of land in the Mission Bay district of San Francisco for what looks to be a new arena, the Golden State Warriors are looking to their fans to see whether or not they should take the step of changing their name.
According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com, "the franchise will keep the Warriors moniker they've used since they were founded in Philadelphia in 1946 but could readopt the name for which they were known when they played in San Francisco from 1962-71 -- the San Francisco Warriors."
"We're very curious what our fans think of that," Warriors president and CEO Rick Welts stated in an interview with ESPN.com. "I couldn't imagine making that decision in the very near future, but we definitely want to see what our fans prefer."
The new arena will not sit on the piers of San Francisco, but according to the Warriors will still showcase a breathtaking view of the San Francisco Bay. The project is projected to be privately financed and may cost in the neighborhood of $1 billion.
One more note: according to Shelburne's article, current employees of the Warriors at Oracle Arena will be given the chance to retain their jobs at the new arena site some eight miles away.
