Yesterday, the Warriors mathematically clinched the Western Conference's best record heading into February...which means Steve Kerr will coach the Western Conference All-Stars at the Madison Square Garden next month.
Kerr becomes the first rookie head coach to coach in the All-Star game since Larry Bird in the 1997-98 season. Bird's Pacers ended up taking the Chicago Bulls to seven games in that year's Eastern Conference Finals, and he was rewarded by being named the NBA's Coach of the Year.
Kerr's Warriors are currently 34-6 after Wednesday night's win over the Houston Rockets, and the team is off to the best start in franchise history. The Warriors have 11 games remaining before the All-Star break, but the coaches are decided by determining which team in each conference has the best record at the beginning of February. If the coach with the best record heading into February coached in the All-Star game the previous year, the coach with the second-best record from that conference is chosen in his place.
