Before Stephen Curry was a bona fide NBA star, he was taking the college game by storm as a standout for Davidson College. The small North Carolina liberal arts school certainly wasn't known as an athletic powerhouse before Curry came on board, but while there he stole the national spotlight and led two memorable NCAA tournament runs in 2007 and 2008.
Curry has done plenty of giving back to Davidson already, but his latest effort sounds like the biggest yet. In a profile on Curry's college coach, Bob McKillop, The Pick and Roll reveals Curry is helping fund a brand new practice facility for his former team. McKillop also had some very insightful things to say about Curry and what brought him to Davidson:
“As a coach, I like to consider the player’s genes. When we recruit we also look at the father and the mother. With Stephen, both his parents, Dell and Sonya, attended college and were successful both on and off the court. Of course his father Dell went on to become a great player in the NBA.”
“Stephen represented the best of everything his parents represented,” McKillop further explained. “On the court, he was always one step ahead of the play. He had tremendous vision, while his shooting and dribbling were spectacular.”
“...we are a small school of around 1,800 students,” said McKillop. “He had a 3.0 GPA and was well ahead of schedule to graduate before he left early to head to the NBA. It is also worth noting that such is his dedication, Stephen has since come back to the program to work towards graduating.”
At Davidson, Curry set the single-season NCAA record for 3-point field goals, and he essentially re-wrote the Davidson record books from scratch. While his slight frame led several teams to pass on him (including the Minnesota Timberwolves, who instead picked Ricky Rubio out of Spain AND Johnny Flynn out of Syracuse), the Warriors were more than happy to pick Curry at #7. The rest, as they say, is history.
